On the way to the OR for a C-Section.
The birth story in brief: Although this was not a part of the birth plan, the midwife and OB made the decision for a C-Section following combination of several signs of possible fetal distress: dilating 1-2cm without progression over 3 hour period despite lots of contractions, some bleeding, & baby's heart rate dropping during the same time period to well below the safe zone according to the NST. The NST was not remarkable during the 3 hours which concerned the providers since there was so much uterine activity. Diagnosis upon Kenzie's birth was premature placental abruption. Also, the umbilical cord was too thin (not sure of exact terminology), but the vessels in the cord were normal size and functioning properly, they just couldn't get the nutrients & oxygen to where they needed to go due to how thin it was--but, good news, her pH test was excellent upon birth indicating there was no issue with oxygen getting to her brain as needed in the womb. We are not sure of reasons for placenta problems (and often it is a mystery) as pregnany was a good one with no issues for mommy or baby, but they speculate that Mommy's head cold and ear infection that developed on 3/25 may have contributed. who knows! Basically, we ended up very lucky with the decision to deliver baby when we did!! We are truly blessed to have her.
